Jaco PastoriusDel 2Joe Killinger about Jaco Pastorius"It seems unnecessary to introduce Jaco Pastorius to anyone who knows a little about jazz or related styles. A few years after his unfortunate death, it seems like Allyn Robinson, the drummer of the C.C. Riders Band Jaco used to play with was right in saying, "There's bass before Jaco and there's bass after Jaco. That's the way it is." Jaco's influence changed the way of playing as well as what people expect to hear from a bass player. But all of Jaco's clones struggle with his phrasing, the nuances of sound colours and his incredible sense of rhytm which goes along with his mastery of harmonics and muting techniques. It is the way he touches the strings and his choice of notes that makes his sound what it is. He was the living proof of what he himself used to say, "Women and the rhythm section first." As Herbie Hancock commented on the liner notes of Jaco's extraordinary debut LP, "Of course, it's not the technique that makes the music, it's the sensivity of the musician and his ability to be able to fuse his life with the rhythm of the time."
All who knew Jaco could see how closely genius and
madness are related. And, indeed, he like no other
knew how to use technique to serve musicianship.
His understanding of the three elements of music -
melody, harmony and rhythm - and his way of
playing them all at once was unique. But not only
his instrumental technique is remarkable, his use
of technical equipment like the echo machine is
also outstanding. The way he uses that machine as
a musical companion, repro-gramming it in the
musical context while he plays, and sometimes
using it as a drum machine with a pattern created
with the bass, is just great." Dette sto å lese i innstikket i coveret på platen: ""Honestly" solo live" (jazzpoint records, CD jp 1032), som ble innspilt på turne i Italia i mars 1986. Platen ble, så vidt jeg vet ikke gitt ut før i 1991. For dere som liker Jaco er denne platen et "must".
